Trulli Homes In Italy

This week I am taking you to Puglia, Italy to visit 19th century Trullo homes.  Trullo is an Italian word for cupolla or domed roof, a Greek architectural element.  I find these homes beautiful, charming and a tad whimsical.  These were standard homes of local farmers in the Itrian valley 200 - 300 years ago.  There are only a few well-preserved homes left now.  Trulli homes are know for their domed roofs.  There is one room under each conical roof with additional living spaces in the arched alcoves.

Last week I was watching House Hunters International show titled “A Trulli happy life in Puglia, Italy” where a single woman wants to start a new life in Italy. This was a wonderful story and I would like to share this with you.  http://www.hgtv.com/video/a-trulli-happy-life-in-puglia-video/index.html.

My Favorite Christmas Cookies

All work and no play makes Katy a dull girl.  We work all week beautifying our home so on the weekend we should enjoy living in our homes with our families.  I am hereby declaring Sunday night as recipe night.  I would like to share one of my favorite easy no-bake Christmas cookie recipes called “Forgotten Cookies”.  Do it on Christmas Eve and they are ready and waiting for you on Christmas morning.

Forgotten Cookies (yields 2 dozen)
* Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

  • 2 egg whites
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup nuts (optional)
Beat egg whites until stiff.  Add sugar gradually, add salt and vanilla.  Fold in chocolate chips and nuts.  Drop by teaspoon on aluminum foil covered cookie sheets.  Set in oven and turn oven off.  Let sit overnight for 12 hours.

If you have a favorite recipe you would like to share, please leave it in the comment section.

Sunburst Mirrors

Sunburst mirrors add a "classic touch” which never goes out of style, whether your style is Traditional, Contemporary or Modern.

Sunburst ornamentation and design pattern can be traced back to the Greek and Roman architecture.  Sunburst mirrors have been around for centuries.  They are timeless and classic, which means they are popular and never go out of style.

French furniture design began with King Louis XIV.  He was named “Sun King” because his contemporaries connected him with the Greek God Apollo and considered the French goverment to revolve around King Louis XIV.

During the 17th century there was a fascination with reflecting surfaces and King Louis XIV was no different.  In fact, in 1682 King Louis XIV unveiled the “Hall of Mirrors” with 357 mesmerizing beautiful mirrors lining the hall of the Palace of Versaille.  This started a 20 year monoply  in the manufacturing of mirrors in France.

Sunburst mirrors, convex mirrors and starburst mirrors created trends in home decoration that would last a lifetime.  Sunburst mirrors add a magical touch to your space. They can be used to expand, add drama or light up your room.  Why not use one in your next decorating project!  Send me pictures and I’ll post it on my blog. Thanks. :-)

Made in America

I have been reading more and more articles about how the "Made In America" label is coming back into vogue.  The Boston Consulting Group is predicting that more products will be manufactured in the United States over the next 5 years due to many factors, such as rising China labor costs, higher US productivity and a weaker dollar.  Plus the fact that shipping costs are rising makes American made products more cost effective.  My thoughts are that there is a resurgence of American pride which gives the “Made In America” label a certain cache.

I found this an interesting read.  Here is the Boston Consulting Group report if you would like to read it yourself.  Let me know what you think.

Antiquing In Sanford

I found some wonderful vintage pieces on my latest Friday shopping trip in Sanford, Florida.  Vintage furniture usually refers to any furniture produced between 1920 and the late 1970’s.

This vintage 1960’s side table has a few dings but otherwise it is in remarkable shape.  Notice the marble top.

This campaign desk is a replica made from reclaimed wood.  It was evidently made by a true artisan since the woodworking detail is fantastic.

What a beautiful cobalt blue vase!

Lennox china - what more can I say?

I just fell in love with these perfume bottles.

CCI Puppy Raiser

One of my most memorable experiences was when I was a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence.  We raised the puppies from 8 weeks to 18 months, while teaching them basic commands and manners.  After that our adult dogs attended 6 months of advanced training.  We didn’t see them until their graduation day.  We raised two dogs for CCI.  My strong willed “child” graduated with honors and my gentle “child” didn’t make it.  So, we adopted her.

Can you guess who is the strong-willed and who is the gentle one?
